Ischgl prides itself on offering the perfect mix of superb, extensive skiing and lively après ski entertainment, and has the longest winter season in Austria, opening at the end of November with skiing right up until May!
Internationally linked to the Swiss tax haven of Samnaun by the aptly named 'Duty-Free' piste, there is skiing here to suit, stretch, flatter and challenge every ability level.
At heart a traditional Austrian village, Ischgl has also embraced modernity, and is justifiably proud of its state-of the-art lifts, avant-garde architecture and dynamic and energetic night-life.
With so much going on, small wonder the resort's motto is 'Relax. If you can…!'
Après ski starts on the mountain in Ischgl and continues from 4pm in the many bars and cafés in the main village pedestrian area. The music rocks, and the Schatzi, Romantic Hütt'n and Niki's Stadl are some of the liveliest après bars in the Alps. The atmosphere is dynamic and very good humoured, and you can party on after dinner in pubs, cocktail bars, or one of the numerous nightclubs - the Trofana Arena is renowned for energetic dancing to one of their regular visiting live bands.
Ischgl and the neighbouring Swiss resort of Samnaun link to form the Silvretta Arena, one of Austria's largest and most picturesque ski areas, with over 235 kms of beautifully maintained pistes, and a host of off-piste opportunities too.
The centre of the skiing is the Idalp plateau, where the three cable-cars up from Ischgl meet, allowing skiers to spread out far and wide via a myriad of chairlifts and gondolas. This is also where the ski-school meets, and has its children’s and beginner slopes.
The Greitspitz is an area to head for to tackle the lovely long 'Run 11', so named for its uninterrupted 11 kms all the way back down into the village itself. More advanced skiers will love Run 14, reportedly the longest black run in Austria, whilst for those who prefer a gentler ski, the Flimjochbahn offers cruisy blues to the Alp Trida, where a further 'Duty Free' run down into Switzerland is a long, winding and attractive route.
The acres of off-piste here also cry out for exploration, and there are several marked but un-pisted itineraries to follow. With over 40 recognised off-piste routes, this is definitely an opportunity to join a guide and discover the excitement and adrenaline rush of making your own first tracks through powder.
With few drag-lifts and wide open slopes, Ischgl is equally a boarders' paradise, and the added bonus of the 'Snow-Art Park', with its kickers, ramps, half-pipes and rails, as well as a beginners' area, has made Ischgl a mecca for those seeking the thrills and spills of free-style.
The Silvretta Region Flexi-Pass is a great option for all who like to explore, as this adds one day each in the neighbouring resorts of Galtür and Kappl, both easily accessible by free ski-bus, adding a further 110 kms of pistes and a whole extra dimension to your Ischgl ski holiday.
