Risoul

Risoul is linked with Vars 1850 to make La Foret Blanche, the largest ski area of the Southern French Alps. This gives visitors access to over 180km of piste.  Risoul also has a marvellous sunshine record, due to its southerly location.  As if this were not enough to recommend it the resort is also compact, easy to get around and, most importantly of all, it is high.  Whilst other resorts tend to be lacking in cover at either end of the season, Risoul can usually be relied upon to have metres of snow from before Christmas until well after Easter.

The key features of Risoul for the advanced skier are the rugged Voutours from the main Pointe de Razis (2,570m) and the Epervier piste from Peyrefolle (2,455m), with the latter being rather shorter and sharper than the former.  Experts should also head out to the winding Ecureuils black at Vars.  Risoul is really intermediate territory though, with good long lines leasing all the way back down to the resort from each of the area’s three main peaks.  For beginners there are some decent low greens, including Chardons at Vallon Vert.  No resort is complete these days without a snowboard park and Risoul is no exception with the daily shaped Surfland.  Here there is the usual boarder cross course and 150m long super pipe and a wide range of ramps that are graded green, blue, red and black.

Off piste there are plenty other chilly activities such as snowmobiling, guided snowshoe excursions, parapente, winter horse riding and skating on the large natural ice rink.  On the warmer side the nightlife is slightly limited, but what it lacks in choice it makes up for in enthusiasm with a few good lively bars, most of which gather the troops straight off the mountain.
