New London snow dome planned for Westfield shopping centre

Exciting news broke last week for skiers and snowboarders in and near to London as it was announced that a new indoor snow centre is on the cards.

It will be developed by Westfield shopping centre at Stratford, immediately next to the Olympic Park and the plan is for it to become the largest snow dome in the world.  It has been compared to the oasis in the desert that is Ski Dubai.

A 300 metre main slope will make it twice as long as the one at Milton Keynes.  In addition there will be toboganning, ice skating, snowboarding ramps and ‘play’ zones for kids.

The project will cost up to £200 million and once planning applications have been made, it is anticipated it should be ready to open during 2015.

It certainly can only be good news for the industry, particularly if it brings newcomers into the sport.

However, Westfield may be slightly optimistic in their estimate of 3 million visitors per year. Although we would be delighted if over 8000 people a day used the facilities there.
