The Five Best Movie Ski Sequences

Every year there are a new range of skiing and snowboarding movies produced by companies like Teton Gravity Research and Matchstick, and perennial favourites such as Warren Miller.

But skiing has featured in lots of films over the years.  Here’s the Chaletline team’s five best ski sequences in the movies:

5. Downhill Racer

This stands out as one of the few ski-specific movies.  Released in 1969, it featured Robert Redford as a downhill racer competing on the World Cup circuit and at the 1968 Winter Olympics.

Filmed on location in Kitzbuhel, St Anton, Wengen and Megeve, it’s widely regarded as one of the best sports movies ever.

4. Inception

This tremendously confusing film from 2010 attracted the plaudits from the critics, but often overlooked is the great ski sequence towards the end of the movie.

The director Christopher Nolan has since claimed that this ski segment was his own homage to James Bond classic ‘On Her Majesty’s Secret Service’ (see below).

3. Chalet Girl

Okay, no one is likely to win a snowboarding competition when only a few weeks before they were beginners, but we’re suckers for this St Anton-based snow-themed rom-com!

2. On Her Majesty’s Secret Service

And in second place, James Bond – possibly including the greatest ever one-ski skiing you’ll ever see!

1. The Spy Who Loved Me

And in top place in our chart, another Bond classic.  Who can watch this iconic scene from 1977, with a great ski chase that segues into probably the best Bond opening ever?
