What’s new in Tignes for Winter 2020/21?

We might have to wait until January 2021 before we can enjoy skiing in Tignes again, but there’s plenty to look forward to in this high-altitude French ski resort.

Tignes is part of the huge Espace Killy ski area with 300km of pistes and 90 lifts that it shares with Val d’Isère.

Enjoy the piste all to yourself

Instead of taking the ‘first lift’ of the day, why not try the last funicular of the day towards the Grande Motte glacier and enjoy dinner at the Panoramic restaurant at 3032m.

You can enjoy  a gourmet meal prepared by Jean-Michel Bouvier before you ski home beneath the stars in the company of a professional instructor.

Stay the night in a mountain refuge

From February onwards, you’ll be able to skin up from Tignes Val Claret towards the Col du Palet refuge in the Vanoise National Park. It’s a climb with 500m of vertical, which is quite steep at the start but accessible to all with superb views.

From the summit, an off-piste run will take you to the Col du Palet refuge – nestled at 2600m – where you’ll enjoy a Savoyard fondue by the fireside before a night in the mountains and your guided descent the next day.

Adrenalin buzz on the Bun-J Ride

If you need an adrenalin buzz, then try sliding down this 30m ski jump on skis or a snowboard while wearing a bungee-style harness. Launch yourself into the air, complete a few stylish moves (or simply scream!) and ride back down to the ground on a zip wire. It’s a thrill like no other!

Try ‘human bowling’ (aka ‘Zorbing)

If that’s not enough excitement for you, then how about hurtling down a track, inside a transparent sphere (a ‘zorb’). You can reach speeds of up to 50 km/h as you try to knock over as many giant inflatable skittles as possible.

Sledging beneath the stars

If you’d like to stay in contact with the ground, then why not swap your skis for a sled (with brakes), helmet and a headtorch and set off for the Palafour chairlift. From the top, there’s a thrilling 3km route down, including high-speed straights, adrenaline-charged bends and a 40m tunnel.
