Are there wolves in Meribel?

It wasn’t so long ago when Les 3 Vallees was a huge forest and there were no ski lifts at all.

However, since Meribel and Couchevel first became ski resorts after the Second World War, followed by Val Thorens and Les Menuires in the late-Sixties and La Tania in the 1990s, the region has become a playground for skiers and is now officially ‘the largest ski area in the world’.

All of which means there’s not as much wildlife as there used to be. You can still quite regularly see sanglier (wild boar), chamois and cerf (deer), especially in summer.

But now, according to reports in local newspaper Le Dauphiné Libéré, a wolf has recently been spotted near Meribel.

This photo shows a purported wolf, photographed in full daylight. Admittedly it’s not that clear, but what do you think?  Is it a wolf?  Have your say on our Facebook page
