Avalanche Danger in the Alps!

If you’ve been following us on Facebook or Twitter, then you’ll know already that the snow is very good in the Alps right now!

Avalanche Risk is high

While the ski lifts are not open in French ski resorts just now, many people have been ski touring…but conditions remain dangerous.

This picture show the damage from an avalanche that took out the Chatelet lift in Méribel last week:

Zermatt cut off

Meanwhile, in Switzerland, both the road and rail link to Zermatt were cut off last weekend after a large avalanche.

This isn’t that uncommon and the resort has many safety measures in place to detect avalanches in advance to minimise the danger.

They are also experienced at clearing the snow: this road was cleared within 48 hours!

Chamonix alert

Chamonix is known for its heavy annual snowfall, but this avalanche In Les Houches was filmed on the same day as the one in Zermatt

Rescue in Val d’Isère

In Val d’Isère, one family were very lucky. Walking from La Daille back to town an avalanche buried them.

Fortunately quick mobilisation and work by the local – plus some amazing luck – meant that all survived – even the father, who was finally found after 2 3/4 hours under the snow.

You can read the full story of his rescue here.
