Standing at the resort’s highest point of 3,300m on a clear day one fifth of France can be surveyed, and clear days are pretty much guaranteed with over 300 days of sunshine a year. The high altitude also makes Alpe d’Huez snow-sure from before Christmas until well after Easter. Its popularity is further secured by almost 250km of marked piste, one of the world’s longest black runs, the Sarenne, and a lift system that reaches far and wide.
On piste beginners are spoilt for choice with a good selection of nursery slopes by the centre of town. A variety of blue and red runs offers intermediates plenty to do, with the Canyon and Balme pistes providing a good test. There is also a fine choice of black runs for the experts who can ski down from the very top of the Glacier de Sarenne. Alpe D'Huez has a good reputation for boarders with a wide choice of off piste, a natural half pipe and fun park. The lift pass also includes the option of a day’s skiing in the nearby resorts of Les Deux Alpes, Puy St Vincent, Montgenèvre and Serre Chevalier.
There’s also plenty of activity for the non-skier with a large sports centre offering, amongst other activities, free indoor swimming, climbing and squash. The après-ski is another great attraction of Alpe d’Huez with over 50 restaurants and 40 something bars.
