Reliable snow, glacier skiing, and well linked to Val d'Isere in the Espace Killy area. A convenient resort but a little lacking in alpine charm.

Tignes

Purpose-built Tignes is one of the largest and most convenient resorts in France.  Set in the Savoie Alpes, Tignes’ ski area combines with that of Val d’Isere to make l’Espace Killy.  The three villages that make up Tignes are Le Lavachet, Le Lac and Val Claret, all of which are linked by free buses 24 hours a day.  Snow is pretty much guaranteed with the glacier open almost all year round.

The skiing at Tignes stretches from the Grande Motte glacier at 3656m down to the villages of Le Fornet and Les Brevieres at either end of the ski area.  Beginners will find some good nursery slopes, whilst intermediates will find many wide and lengthy pistes, enabling them to ski from one end of the resort to the other using only blue and red runs. Experts should not miss the steep mogul fields at Toviere and Solaise and incredible off-piste such as Le Tour du Charvet, Le Grand Vallon and the Col du Pers.  The highest non-glacier skiing from the Col des Ves has been re-branded the SPOT (Skiing the Powder of Tignes) zone.  The area promotes an understanding of the mountain and provides off-piste education to first time free riders.  The SPOT is also home to a boarder cross course, backcountry free style zone and one of the two snowparks in L’Espace Killy area.

Off the slopes there is a nice selection of tamer activities at the Bains du Montana which has a pool, jacuzzi and fitness centre.  The Lagoon Centre in Tignes Le Lac offers rest and relaxation with a 25-metre swimming pool with stunning mountain views. It also features a sports complex with fitness centre and weight training room equipped with state-of-the-art workout equipment, 'spinning' (indoor aerobic biking), fitness, cardio-training, swimming and palming classes.

A slightly more unusual off-piste option is ski-joring where a skier is dragged round a lake by a horse!  The nightlife in Tignes is somewhat calmer than some of the other popular French resorts, although there are still over 50 bars to choose from each evening.
