WEsayThe sole French componant of the otherwise Italian Milky Way circuit. An unpretentious town with bags of charm.
Montgenevre boasts some of the best snow in the Southern Alps. It is just 100km from Turin and it is the only French component of a predominantly Italian ski area. The Milky Way area has more than 400km of piste, providing a whole range of slopes for all abilities. Montgenevre is extremely convenient for skiing with no accommodation more than 5 minutes from the resort. The old village is very attractive with an old church and original rambling chalets. Montgenevre is a very friendly resort and is perfect for families.
There are plenty of lifts departing from the centre of the resort. One by the tourist office takes you up to the south-facing Chavlet area, which is perfect for a spot of relaxed morning skiing. Les Chalmottes, near the main road, is the quickest way to the mid-mountain station in the main, north-facing area, just above the nursery slopes.
Montgenevre is great for beginners as the nursery area is extensive and features a combination of wide, open slops and gentle narrower runs through the trees. It’s also very good for intermediate skiers, with some more challenging slopes below les Anges. Experts should venture into Italy, via the Rocher de l’Aigle chairlift to view the spectacular of the Massif du Chenaillet. From the top you can head east into Italy on some high reds or a black. Or for a bigger black challenge, head off-piste or to the Chavlet section.
Away from the slopes there is an ice-skating rink, walking trails, snowmobiling and ‘ruisseling’ – climbing frozen waterfalls! As the resort is 'family friendly', après-ski is limited although there are a few nice, reasonable restaurants, bars and clubs. In addition, Montgenevre plays host to a festival every January - 'Les Januades'. During the 3 weeks, there is jazz, cinema, theatre and cabaret every evening.
